In the mid-1970’s, NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) staff and board of directors recognized this growing need to provide a resource to better inform the growing body of NFPA codes and standards. In 1982 the NFPA Board approved the formation of the NFPA Research Foundation (now known as the Fire Protection Research Foundation). In order to ensure that research carried out was independent, the Foundation was formed as a separate 501(c) (3) organization. It has given the following mission: To plan, manage and communicate research in support of the NFPA mission.

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers was established in 1950 and incorporated as in independent organization in 1971. It is the professional society representing those practicing the field of fire protection engineering. The Society has approximately 4500 members in the United States and abroad, and 57 regional chapters. The purpose of the Society is to advance the science and practice of fire protection engineering and its allied fields, to maintain a high ethical standard among its members and to foster fire protection engineering education.

The members of the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) are the senior fire officials in the U.S. states and their chief deputies. NASFM’s mission is to protect human life, property and the environment from fire and related hazards. The NASFM Fire Research and Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, works with companies, government agencies, associations, academic institutions and others that strive to achieve higher levels of fire safety for consumers and for the emergency response community. The NASFM Foundation aims to further NASFM’s mission through science, innovation, research and education. NASFM’s long history of working on a broad range of fire protection issues, its connections within the public safety community, and its commitment to science- and fact-based outcomes makes the NASFM Foundation particularly suited to assisting organizations that seek to make the world a safer place from the devastations of fire.

The MSB, established in 2009, is a Swedish government authority responsible for all work related to public safety, emergency management, and civil defence. We work for strong civil protection and good emergency preparedness in which everyone shares responsibility. Our work is carried out in close cooperation with other societal stakeholders and encompasses the entire scale of threats and risks - from everyday traffic accidents up to major disasters. The MSB employs some 850 people, and have offices in Stockholm and Karlstad. Our colleges in Revinge and Sandö perform training and exercises for personnel in the civil protection and civil security.

The work undertaken by SFPA The Swedish Fire Protection Associationcovers broad field of activities including a production of printed material and dissemination of information, the management and administration of training programmes, as well as all manner extensive experience and competence in these areas. Since its foundation in 1919, the association has played a vital role in on-going fire protection efforts. SFPA is co-operation very close with the 22 Regional Fire Protection Associations, and together we have the same trademark. SFPA has an important function as a pressure group to bring influence to bear on politicians, industry and commerce, public organisations and private individuals to actively prevent damage by fire. Founded in 2002, EARPA is the association of automotive R&D organisations. It brings together the most prominent independent R&D providers in the automotive sector throughout Europe. Its membership counts at present 33 members ranging from large and small commercial organisations to national institutes and universities. EARPA, as the platform of automotive researchers, aims at actively contributing to the European Research Area and the future EU Framework Programmes. In this task, EARPA seeks a close cooperation with the automotive industry, the automotive suppliers, the oil industry as well as the European Institutions and the EU Member States. EARPA is independent from any external bodies or institutions and is only funded by its members’ fees and is governed by an Executive Board and a General Assembly.

The European Technology Platform for Industrial Safety (ETPIS) was founded in 2004 at the prompting of the Directorate DG Research of the European Commission. It currently gather about 500 individual members ranging through: industry from various sectors (manufacturing, chemical, energy, construction…), research institutes, academia, Member State authorities, consultants, NGOs, standardisation bodies… It is an open forum aiming at defragmenting the research investment in industrial safety by sharing recent results and ideas for new initiatives. The Swedish Bus and Coach Federation (BR) is the trade organization representing the professional bus and coach industry in Sweden. BR is proud to include nearly 400 unique member businesses as active members, representing 90 % of the total bus and coach industry in Sweden. The men and women of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) are dedicated to the fire protection and stewardship of over 31 million acres of California's privately-owned wildlands. In addition, the Department provides varied emergency services in 36 of the State's 58 counties via contracts with local governments. CAL FIRE has nearly 5,000 permanent personnel who operate over 800 fire stations throughout the state. As part of the CAL FIRE team since 1995, the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) supports the CAL FIRE mission to protect life and property through fire prevention engineering programs, law and code enforcement and education.

Södra Älvsborg Fire & Rescue Services operates in six municipalities in West Sweden; Bollebygd, Borås, Mark, Svenljunga, Tranemo and Ulricehamn. The Fire & Rescue Service has 25 fire stations strategically located around the municipalities. The head office and command center are located in Borås.

The Confederation of Swedish Firefighters (BRF) is a national politically independent trade union for employees in all sectors of fire and rescue service. The union was formed in 1945 and was negotiating in 1946. The union has about 9000 members. BRF is divided into national regions and each region in the confederation appoints their own representatives to the congress. Congress is held every four years, next time in 2011. The board is elected by the Congress.

The European Firefighter Unions Alliance (EFFUA) is an EU alliance of independent trade unions representing fire fighters which includes unions solely representing fire fighters; and those representing a wider range of occupations, but including fire fighters. Participating countries affirmed that the EFFUA is part of the EU labour movement and shall work in co-operation with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the Global Unions Council.

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is a Pune, INDIA based research and testing institute engaged in sponsored R&D work, development testing, certification and homologation services for the automotive and auto-component industry. CITA - International Motor Vehicle Inspection Committee is an international not-for-profit association, based in Brussels, Belgium. It represents all types of organisations and stakeholders (government, private sector, dedicated inspection centres, garage-based test centres and test equipment manufacturers) who share a common interest in exchanging information, developing best practices and draft international standards in the field of road vehicle inspection. CITA currently has 114 members worldwide, representing over 50 countries. Its work focuses on improving transport sustainability with particular emphasis on road safety and environmental protection.

The European Railway Agency (ERA) in Valenciennes, France, helps to build an integrated European railway area by reinforcing rail safety and promoting interoperability. Set up in 2006, the ERA develops common technical standards and common approaches to safety, working closely with stakeholders from the rail sector as well as with national authorities, the EU institutions and other interested parties. Featuring a dedicated Safety Unit, ERA also monitors and reports on rail safety in the EU.

IAFSS was founded with the primary objective of encouraging research into the science of preventing and mitigating the adverse effects of fires and of providing a forum for presenting the results of such research. The International Association for Fire Safety Science perceives its role to lie in the scientific bases for achieving progress in unsolved fire problems. It will seek cooperation with other organizations, be they concerned with application or with the sciences that are fundamental to our interests in fire. It will seek to promote high standards, to encourage and stimulate scientists to address fire problems, to provide the necessary scientific foundations and means to facilitate applications aimed at reducing life and property loss.
